For something a little fancy, a little celebratory, I often think of a Champagne Cocktail — with it's sugar cube at the bottom of the glass, a few dashes of bitters on top and some bubbly — as the standard. Or a French 75, a mix of Champagne, gin, lemon, and simple syrup. Here's just a little twist on that, the French 77.
This variation — which swaps elderflower liqueur for simple syrup — hits all the bases. Tart, sweet, bubbly, and it's super pretty to boot.
French 77
aka an Elderflower French 75
2 oz champagne (or sparkling wine)
1 oz gin
1/2 oz elderflower liqueur (I like St-Germain)
1/2 oz lemon juice
lemon twist garnish
Combine gin, St-Germain, and lemon juice in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a chilled coupe. Top with champagne and garnish with a lemon twist.
