Thanksgiving is a time for getting together with loved ones and expressing gratitude for the things we value most in this country — the right to second helpings of mashed potatoes and awkward conversations with relatives. You could take a bite of turkey every time your weird Aunt starts in with a story, but realistically, that only gets you by for half the evening. Instead, I suggest keeping a cocktail close at hand to sip during uncomfortable lulls or when the subject inevitably turns toward politics.
This cocktail is inspired by one at The Cruise Room (Denver's first post-prohibition bar). It's got zero pumpkin spice flavoring, but the apple butter and muddled sage make it especially fitting for the Thanksgiving palate.
The Allay Thanksgiving Cocktail
2.5 oz bourbon
1 T apple butter
1/4 oz lemon juice
4 fresh sage leaves
Muddle 3 sage leaves in the bottom of a shaker and add bourbon, apple butter, lemon juice, and ice. Shake, strain and serve over a large ice cube. Slap sage leaf to release its oils, and use as garnish.
